Texans Jets Highlights (watch adibi's sack).

Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.8

Shut it.

People are now saying that Mario Williams isn't comfortable and some are even saying that he can't make the switch. I'm happily telling everyone you're wrong. Not only can he do this but he would have had at least one sack against the Jets on Monday. He ran a stunt to the inside on the play the Xavier Adibi got his sack and kind of gave up on the tail end instead of blowing up Ladanian Tomlinson and picking up the sack though. Not just that but seeing the attention he got from the Jets line in general. He gave up a sack and also allowed Adibi to utilize the gap he opened by going inside instead of trying to take the edge.

In all the things I've read about Phillips scheme I've never heard of anyone talking about what he does for his middle linebackers. Not any fan of San Diego and Dallas would know this but not many people do, and that's the fact that the scheme will drastically improve the play up the middle. The Chatters have and did have Shaun Phillips and Dallas has Bradie James. Both good players, but both have had there best seasons under Phillips. With Cushing this could be huge. Ryans is already a great MLB but Cushing has something to prove. And Phillips will use that to motivate him. He'll get more chances to blitz the QB and lay night hits over the middle playing in the 3-4.

When the Texans are lucky enough to play teams with sub-par offensive lines he'll dominate. And we do play a lot of pass happy offenses this year as well.

Anyway, review the video posted on the blog after this. Let me know what you think about Mario being lost.

P.S. Peyton Manning might miss week one cause of the neck surgery. Could he actually miss a start? And if so Mario will take out his anger from the haters out on Painter.

Playoff Picks: AFC

With the preseason upon us its never too early to make some extremely premature playoff picks and division winners. And so I must get it done.

Last season the Chiefs surprised a lot of people winning the AFC West. I'm thinking back to reality for them and the same for the Chargers. I believe they have put together a team that will most definately win that division. The addition of Takeo Spikes means the teams best rusher Shawn Phillips can now really let loose with consistant help up the middle. Phillip Rivers will make the offense run and they should have no problem with the division.

The AFC East is a two horse race. The Patriots and the Jets are the favorites. The Patriots seemed to know that the Jets run the ball a lot. The most in the league, and they countered it by signing some big defensive lineman. With Wilfork, Haynesworth and Ellis all on one line its hard to believe dominating the clock will be possible against New England this year. And thats the real only way to beat them. Keeping Brady and company off the field.

While the Colts have dominated this division its now possible for a team to challenge them. But not win the division quite yet. The Texans have drastically improved the defense and the Jags did as well. The Titans are not even a challenge to most of the division without handling Chris Johnsons contract. The Colts should win the division but look for the Texans to make some noise and possibly get a wild card spot this year.

The AFC North is so hard to call at times. The Ravens and the Steelers look at championship form to start the preseason in terms of just names and the people added this offseason. The Browns showed some people that they can win. But really they aren't ready for the top heavy division there in yet. The Bengals are rebuilding. Now I'm taking the Ravens for one reason. Lamar Woodley called out Joe Flacco and that got to the Ravens defense a bit. When they're mad they can be unstoppable and I think they'll take the season match up this year. And take the division.

Is The NFL A Childs game now ?

So early today Steelers safety Ryan Clark was just another player on the team throwing insulting words at NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell. Clark was quoted as saying the commish had too much power when it came to punishments and fines.

As an American citizen you have certain rights, one is the right to free speech. So Clark obviously can say whatever he pleases about whomever. At the same time Goodell also has the right to say whatever he pleases. The fact that players such as Harrison and Clark choose to bash the person that is really what most normal people would consider there boss in the same situation is quite annoying though. He was also quoted saying he and many teammated wouldn't vote to ratify the union unless some of Goodells power was relinquished. Here are the facts though.

Clark is acting like a child, a child that never got told no. By the end of the interview Clark was chest to cheat with a reporter that was asking questions about the issue. That's unacceptable. As an athlete its your choice to stop and answer questions to the press. So if you get mad or don't want to be bothered with it just don't answer. But in no case is it okay to go chest up with a person doing there job.

Players like Clark and Harrison simply pop off at the mouth with no thought of the consequences in mind. Last season Harrison threw a temper tantrum over fines, doing exactly what Randy Moss did early this week. He threatened to retire if he keep getting fined rather than try to change his ways. I'm all for bit hits, but if your boss says you can't do something while your at work then it can't be done plain and simple. Don't complain about it, don't threaten retirement when you get upset. Get over it.

James Harrison might actually get away with it because his comments were made during the lockout. But I don't believe this will go unpunished.

Not only should Goodell fine this child he should make an example of him. Maybe when he Clark was a boy no only meant to fall on the ground and cry till he got his way. Or maybe just try to go chest up on a guy who obviously can't defendant himself against an NFL player to prove a point. If grown men didn't act like boys maybe Roger Goodell wouldn't have to ground them for inappropriate behaviour.

Blessing In Disguise?

While many hated it some might have even considered it a lost cause at points during the summer the NFL lockout was e exactly what the game needed in so many ways.

In the past players could actually holdout Android force transport to trade them. Just like Carson Palmer of the Bengals is doing right now. The huge difference under the new cba is that unless your retired you are going to be fined 30k a day you don't participate in team activities.

With only the Titans star running back Chris Johnson left holding out for a new deal(which may work in his case only because his value to the overall success of that offense) the owners may have been on to something. Even if a player is unhappy with the situation they're in as long as they play and stay in shape they hold value. Making it easier to owners to move them with less distraction.

Its Back

Well the lockouts over and therefore so is my sabaticle from blogging friends. Today was the official start or free agency and it started off good. Big names released adding to the pool. Now so many divisions are turned around. Teams that weren't considered contenders are, and best of all with the owners agreeing that every team had to spend a certain amount of money the league should continue to get more competitive.

As always the Patriots made huge additional without using anything of value to get what they wanted. Picking up somewhat of a problem child in Albert Haynesworth was I believe the best move made this off-season. Just 2 years ago he was considered the best DT in football. And though his time in Washington wasn't even close to productive he showed he still had the burst that made him 100 million dollars when not injured and whining. Winning is the ultimate elixer and that's what they do in New England. The Pats also traded for WR Chad Ochocinco. Now he's still productive on field. But along with his off-field antics and age he might only have 2 seasons left. I've heard people compare it to them getting Randy Moss and that's kind of crazy to me. In terms of stats Jerry Rice, Terrel Owens, and Randy and the three most productive players at that position. And if Chad has a record year like Moss did with Brady he still wouldn't he close to them. Is he an elite player of our time? Yes. Is he a argument for the Hall? Yes. But he'll never be on the level of Moss. Nevertheless the Patriots got much better.

Reggie "pay me" Bush was traded to Miami and was replaced by the same type of back in Darren Sproles. The difference is you don't have to please Sproles by making him formations or playin him a certain percentage of time. He just does what's asked. Be fast and cause mismatches. Now some would say Bush did cause mismatches because of the formations he was put in. I disagree any player faster than the player guarding them is a mismatch. So not just Bush would have that advantage.

Some people don't get what Seattle is up to or even if they are trying to compete this upcoming season. A year after upsetting the Champs they have released Matt Hasselback and signed Tavaris Jackson. I honestly believe they'll be just as good next season.

The Eagles have mass the most noise so far. Signing Nnamdi, Vince Young, Cullen Jenkins, and Jason Babin. Making them the favorite to win it all from what I'm hearing. People really need to realize something though. Is Nnamdi the best corner in football? Yes, but these other players are not what I would call consistant. Cullen Jenkins has never played in a 4-3 before, Jason Babin just had his first double digit sack season ever and we all know Vince is just insurance. He be no means will get to play unless absolutely necasarry. While I'm imressed by what they've gotten some so far. Its almost like they are trying to take the Cowboy way to winning. Which is spend whatever it takes. In a division in which you play against Demarcus Ware, Justin Tuck, Brian Orapko, just to name some of the pass rushers in the division. They should probably focus more on protecting Vick and less on defense. Because the NFC East is an extremely weak division when it comes to offense.

Though the Texans missed out on the Nnamdi sweepstakes they Did make some great moves. Signing Jonathan Joseph and Daniel Manning to long term deals. This really solidifies a secondary that ranked last at everything last season. They also cut former first rounder Amobi Okoye because he just didn't fit in a 3-4 scheme. He quickly signed with the Bears.

What golf really needs

We're two days into the US Open and young Rory Mcillroy has shown that even with the absence of Tiger Woods in the field history can still be made in golf.

Shooting a near perfect round until slicing a ball into the rough and double bogeying on 18 Friday he proved he has at least learned to weather the storm a little better than he has in the past. This is huge for a game that has longed for another young phenom for what seems like years. As a fan I know golf needs this, if its not Rory than maybe it would be Dustin Johnson. After seeing a young Tiger go out and win the Masters at such a young age and then dominating the sport in the fashion he did for so long, and then dropping off so quickly. Well to say the least to anyone who actually watches golf it leaves you wanting more. Regardless whether its an American or not, whether you have always rooted for them or not you just want more.

With one more day to play and with Mcillroy holding a decent lead we can only hope he holds on to take it. Because let's face it, rooting for the top American players as of right now is so boring. Steve Stricker and Phil Mickleson are the top two and "Lefty" is all the way down in world rankings to 15.

So to Rory I say good luck Sunday. The game needs you right now, as a player, role model, and most of all as the talent you are.

The Blame Game

The finals are over, and me being a person that listens to mainly sports talk radio all I've been hearing about is the Heat. Whether its about them not achieving the goal, Lebron choking, or even trading Chris Bosh. Now don't get me wrong I'm all for change and even more after losing but he's necessary for them to have success in the future.

Round one against the Sixers was basically a warm up. No they didn't sweep but they did prove a point. They can't be beat by a weaker team in a seven game series. And just about everyone on the team played pretty well. No complaints here.

Now round 2 against Boston things were so different. The games seemed close but really never were, mostly because of Lebron closing out mostly every game during the series that was close. No joke, and the weird thing is that the player considered to be the closer and leader on the team had maybe the best match up on offense with Ray Allen guarding him most of the time. Am I saying Mr. Wade choked? No. Not yet. But with a premeire defensive player like Paul Peirce on him he continuously did what he couldn't ever d years before. Penetrate the Celtics defense. By doing this he got to the line a lot. And really that's why they won the series. Rebounding and free throws.

Now in the next series Miami had the leagues top team and MVP in Derrick Rose and the Bulls. During the series in Chicago, the home town of Wade. It almost seemed like he wasn't quite home sick out there, more like sick of being back home. He played horrible all series. And even the be-littled Chris Bosh played great. Bosh out playing Boozer was pivotal in the series.simply because if he was a defensive liability he would play less minutes. And the best Boozer is a benched Boozer in the end. Which is why know who Taj Gibson is. Not because of pure talent, but because Boozer cannot guard a perimeter power forward who can dribble, and he can.

Now during the series Lebron actually guarded Rose and was proud to do so. This is when I started having a little hope for him in terms of maturity. And he Did his job holding him to just 6% from the floor while matched up with him. That's almost a selfless decision and let's keep it real, that's not like him.

Did he disappear in the Finals? yeah compared to what he normally does.

But this begs a question. With him struggling why is it that the so called cut throat Wade never did anything about it? Why is it that while Lebron does deserve all he gets it's okay as Wade continuously sits right next to him and never take any blame?

I find it weird that a player portrayed the way Wade is with the media hasn't caught more about "cough gate." I mean people still called him the leader of the Heat all season long as his numbers actually went down a bit and Lebron basically got the same stats that won him an MVP. Well less PPG but account for his shooting percentage and it really evens out.

All and all I honestly believe that both Lebron and Wade disappeared in the finals. Bosh hit a game winner. No not at the buzzer but right after being called out for not being tough enough on the boards he did Wades job. Closed out a game.

Agree or Disagree

I still remember watching the draft the year Joe Flacco was picked in the first round. And the next year when Rex Ryan left Baltimore and went to coach in New York. Now both teams tried to use the same general concept, build a great defense and hope that the young quarterback can hold it together enough to get the win. I honestly hate that teams think this is a blueprint for winning and had to write about it.

I just saw Mel Kiper saying since the Ravens now have all these threats at receiver and Flacco is so good the AFC champion Steelers need corner help to stop the Ravens. Funny because they won the division in which both teams are in. And its obvious that the Ravens would make the playoffs every year with or without Flacco. They are actually known for their defense winning them games.

Here are some players taken after Flacco in the 08 draft. Chris Johnson, Rashard Mendenhall, Brandon Flowers, Curtis Lofton(led the league in tackling as a rookie), Desean Jackson, and Jamaal Charles. Obviously more people were taken but these are people I think are better than him as a player.

After seeing what we've seem would you trade up in a draft to get Joe Flacco with these players on the board?

Patriots trying to keep pace with AFC East rival Jets, as they add depth on defense. . .

The New England Patriots inked DL Marcus Stroud to a 2 year deal. Where he'll play on there line is still unknown. And the Patriots haven't officially announced the move, but he did accept congratulation messages from friends and ex-teammates on his twitter yesterday.

Packers making moves, or refinancing?

Packers cut LB A.J. Hawk today. He has a 10.5 million dollar raise in his contract and could very well rework his deal for a smaller amount.
What's weird to me is that by doing this they are leaving the option of other teams contacting him. There are plenty of contenders that run the 3-4 scheme who wouldn't hesitate to pay big money to solidify there defenses. The Jets come to mind, especially because of the way they are now stocking up on big name and play type players.

Jets still making moves with lockout looming. . .

Bob Sanders is visiting today with the New York Jets. The former Colt has already visited Jacksonville and Buffalo.

Shared via Tweetcaster

Are the New York Jets turning into the Yankees of the NFL? They are constantly trying to fix things that aren't quite broke. Releasing a productive group of players like Damien Woody, Jason Taylor, and Kris Jenkins to go out and get yet another name. Sanders was a great player in his prime. But after a season in which they fell short of their lofty expectations they feel the moves are necessary.

The NFL: A Billion Dollar Pie

"This ruling means there is irrefutable evidence owners had a premeditated plan to lockout players and fans for more than two years."

This is a quote from the NFL Players Association. After knowing this there are now a few things we as the general public know. The owners of our respective teams have absolutely no respect for what we actually mean to the game. They said that whether there was a season or not they planned on collecting money from the television networks. Basically they don't think they need a season to make money.

Either the Players Association will either take this to court, a court that has already ruled it wrong for the owners to get paid from the networks without a season. Or the current CBA will be extended. Hopefully the owners realize that regardless of the fact that they are rich, powerful, and can very easily take away a sport that's gained popularity when all others have already had work stoppages doesn't mean they should over the players getting a very small slice of their billion dollar pie.

Video of Dontay Moch, super quick off the snap.

So I saw the tweet from Todd Mcshay earlier and I went and looked at some of his highlights on youtube. I only watched games against teams with pretty good offensive lines. I picked the game against Missouri. There line was decent and Blaine Gabbert is a good QB. Take a look, this guy is crazy fast. Its more impressive to see this kind of speed during play.

Combine Sleeper

Dontay Moch just ran the 40 in the low 4.4-second range. Stupid fast. College defensive end but headed to outside LB at 6-2, 248.

Shared via Tweetcaster

Todd Mcshay tweeted this from Indy. Speed means a lot for a 3-4 OLB. Maybe the only necessary requirement, the muscle and moves come over time in the weight room and on the field. Perfect example would be Demarcus Water of the Cowboys. Was just known for edge speed and now is the best pass rusher in football argueably. He is known for his off-season studying of tape. He watches the moves of the top players in the league and practices each.

The New Look League. . .

With the NBA trade deadline here and gone and a lot of blockbuster deals done I have to get into it on my blog. One of my first blogs written on here wash about the gradual shift of power from the East to the West. Now with Carmelo and others switching coasts things are happening now.

With the acquisition of Melo the Knicks definanately got better. Not quite a title contender but better. Chauncey Billups is still an effective player and will be the remainder of this season but he's a free agent after the season. For at least two seasons the Knicks were looking for the point guard able to push pass and shoot. Like Steve Nash did in the system in Phoenix. Raymond Felton was that guy and I believe Mike D'antoni knew that and didn't want to deal him. But the front office did whatever they had to do to get Melo "home." Crazy they would trade all that for a player like Melo. He's great at scoring but horrible on defense. And he's always been a volume shooter which could be good without a dominant big in the middle. Which is who the lakers traded shaq when they had the chance. Volume shooters do two things. Score and limit touches to the post. Look at the Lakers now. If needed Kobe can shoot as many times as possible and Gasol is effecient enough to score 18 to 20 points on ten or twelve shots. Amare might not like that come Sunday in Miami if Melo is shooting like that.

Now Denver is in a very different situation than some of the teams that made moves at the break. Some might say they are now in a rebuilding mode and if you mean for the rest of the season then I agree. The system there is actually built for the players they got in the deal. Danilo Galinarri is a great young wing with a skilll set that will allow him to flourish in Denver. And just like in New York they push the ball and score a lot on fastbreaks. Its really a matter of him buying into the system. Raymond Felton can start or spell Ty Lawson they both can push and pass well and I think at least George Karl knows what he's got. We'll see if they make a late season push and stay in the playoff hunt they'll be dangerous.

Not to be upstaged by big brother the New Jersey Nets sent rookie Derrick Favors and Devin Harris to Utah for Derron Williams. Williams is argueably the best point guard in basketball and for a team playing under par this season it should be a good move. The Nets are moving in a year to Brooklyn and having a player like Williams will lure more talent if he signs the extension after this season.

Boston moved a slew of players to acquire Jeff Green from Oklahoma City. They did have to send big Kendrick Perkins in the deal. But by moving Marquis Daniels they made cap space to sign forward Troy Murphy. That would be a huge move.

Tourney Time. . . . . .

Its now a done deal in the NFL until the draft at least and maybe longer if the owners and players can't come to some kind of agreement soon. Luckily to fans of the greatest and I think the most wide open and fair playoff in any sport. March Madness people. 60 plus teams going at it for one championship.

True its a bit early but I find a prediction isn't really a prediction unless you say it sometime before it happens. I'm giving my inside look at the four number one seeds in this years tournament.

First off, Ohio State just lost to a extremely talented Wisonsin team today. But nevertheless they will most likely win out and get themselves a number one. They are deep athletic and at times look unbeatable.

Next is my favorite team and I'm not taking them because of that. Duke is a team powered by veterans like Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith but have a lot of youth. Seth Curry and Andre Dawkins are great. And even though they did lose a huge piece in seven footer Greg Zubek the whole has been nicely filled by the very athletic frontline. With the Plumlee's and Ryan Kelly. The should make some noise in the tourney.

Texas as of today is ranked lower than Kansas but that won't be the case as the season finishes. The Longhorns play great defense and that wins you games at all levels. They are also extremely good on the other side. Jordan Hamilton is a great player. They are first in the Big 12 and assuming they finish there it should earn them the number one.

With eleven current teams as I write having 15 wins or more you can be sure the Big East will have a handful of teams in the tournament this year. Four of those teams have 20 wins. And Pitt is the best of those four. Great back court play with Wanamaker and Gibbs is something that's irreplaceable during the tournament. The least amount of mistakes always gives you a better chance of winnng. And they have that. They should make some more noise during the season. Pitt is known for closing out seasons. Anyone remember hearing about Dwaune Blair about this time two years ago? Of course those of us that watch college ball do. And even then most of us write that team off as inexperienced.

Now we'll see how it all shapes up. As usual I'm hoping my picks are right.

Here it is. . .

In football its easy to say who is and isn't valuable. And at the same time players are overlooked because what they did during the season was a great book of works but wasn't flashy. And in some instances because the league has a point they area trying to prove.

There is no tripple double in football. But filling the stat sheets is equally hard in any sport. Only one player in the league had 100 tackles double digit sacks and more than 5 forced fumbles this season. He is also playing in the super bowl Sunday. James Harrison.

Now who would have thought that. Not only was he the only one he wash far ahead of all competition. Its sad that no one even knows this stuff about him. Last time he was in the super bowl he made the biggest play of the game. With Troy on the field.

He was also fined 250,000 dollars by the league for what they called illegal hits. Sad a player with stats we haven't seen since Kevin Green did the same thing. The league is simply trying to not award what they say are bad habits.

Go chech his stats and honestly tell me he didn't deserve it.

Packers at Steelers 2009.

Great game. I can see the Super Bowl going the same way. Less points though. Both defenses are much improved and Polumalu wasn't playing in this one.

Super Bowl Preview

After watching the games yesterday I had to write a blog about the two teams that made it to the super bowl. Now as you know I picked the Bears to win but that doesn't mean I'm taking the team that beat them so bad yesterday.

The Packers played some decent football yesterday but not great. They were given at least one first down and the pick by urlacher should have been a pick six and that helmet to helmet call on peppers was bogus. If you want to play qb professionally then you have to be ready for that. It wasn't malicious hit. Anyone remember when lawrence taylor broke joe theismans hip? Was there a penalty on that. Nope.

On offense the Packers played horribly after the first drive of the game. If not for the fact that the Bears had to go through all three qb's it might have actually been a game.

Can anyone after seeing the game yesterday say that you think the Packers showed on either side of the ball that they can beat the steelers? The way they played yesterday I'm saying no.

The Steelers defense is too good. I actually thought the same thing about the Bears but as well as they played it wasn't enough with absolutely no production from the offense. The Steelers should be able to run the ball as the Bears did. But in no way possible do I see Dom Capers coming up with something to confuse the Steelers offense like he did the Bears. After all Ben has literally seen almost every defense already in a lot of big games.

I am impressed by the Pack though. I just don't see them beating the Steelers yet. But Rodgers is an elite qb that will be in more super bowls. At least one more, he is that good. His team as a whole just isn't quite where the Steelers are yet as a team.

Championship Weekend

Jets and Steelers in the AFC. Packers and Bears in the NFC. No way I thought the Jets in this game but they made it. The question is what teams have what it takes to make it to the big game in Dallas?

The Jets have shown their defense can definately win them ball games. But can they really out play the Steelers at home? I don't think they can. Though its possible I am picking Pittsburgh. Mark Sanchez is getting better and they're line is playing some inspired football. But the Steeler defense is just too much. I'm actually going to give a score in these last blogs of the playoffs to give everyone a good look at how I'm feeling. 27-17 Pittsburgh in this one people.

Aaron Rodgers just played the best game of his playoff career. But so did Jay Cutler. After hearing the Bears say they were unhappy about the media solely talking about Rodgers after last weeks games I kind of agreed. Rodgers gas the luxury of playing behind a line that's been together a while and in a system that hasn't changed since he was drafted. While it did take a while the Bears offense has come together. And the Packers are a great team on both sides of the ball. But the Bears are simple. Coverage based defense with pressure coming from the front four rarely over load blitzing. I think the Packers have to count on the big play and it puts them at a disadvantage. When they played earlier this season Chicago played extremely deep with an extra safety on the field on almost every play. I see this working again. I'm going 30-24 Bears here. I picked them to make it to the Super Bowl to begin the season. So I have to stick with it.

Down To It. . . NFC Edition

Bears, falcons, green bay, and the seahawks? Really I am not surprised like most. But do I think they have what it takes to go deeper into the second season? Well here ya go.

Green bay can offensively and defensively as well. Aaron rodgers is a prime time quarterback. But atlanta does everything just a little better than them. It should be a great game but I just don't see Matt Ryan losing another one at home soon.

The bears should kill seattle. Too much defense for the seahawks this time. The bears don't use weird or exotic packages like gregg williams they cover and let the line get after the quarterback. And without that fast deep threat seattle is at a disadvantage.

And down to it I am goin out on a limb and taking the bears because of that defense. I will admit atlanta is a much better team but chicago is just built for this game.

Down To It. . . . AFC Edition

Now we know its goin to be baltimore, pittsburgh, new england, and new york in the afc race. It wouldn't be right for me not to make my picks publicly.

Well I am most definately taking new england over new york for one reason this is the game they want every season so I garuntee they will be ready. And unlike the colts they are actually better than years past.

I am taking pittsburgh solely because of home field. That's a matchup that's always good and I expect the same this time.

I would call it a toss up between new england and pittsburgh but in all honesty I don't believe that. I think the patriots are built to win this one. Tight ends built to stop the blitz and also slip out on play action and make big plays. There running backs are also better at blocking too. Woodhead and green ellis might be towards of the best at it. So that's the afc side of the bracket there will be more for the nfc people.
